And the countdown begins ...

Thus, I’d say its time to tell Joe to join his pharmaceutical lawyer wife in the private sector - I’m sure he’ll have no problem finding a nice seven-figure lobbying gig to round out the Lieberman’s as Washington’s next great corporate power couple.

Can't wait till August 8th!

BEATLES

I was never the John Lennon fan, but when he was murdered in 1980, I gravitated to his songs. George was undoubtedly the most talented musician, but it's a toss up as to who was the more prolific songwriter... John or Paul. I tended to give Paul more credit, until he tried to change the Lennon/McCartney songwriting credits to some songs. Yeah, McCartney/Lennon works for me... .NOT.
Revolution

Hopefully, the revolution has started.

L.A. Guns - Never Enough

And then we have L.A. Guns.
Faster Pussycat - Bathroom Wall

You basically have to be from L.A. to know this band. Used to be my theme song.
Duckie dancing (Pretty In Pink)

It's fun finding the clips to movies and old videos that, up until recently, I could only blog about.

This is my all time fave, in that lipsynch movie genre (think Tom Cruise dancing to "Old Time Rock N Roll").

And You Thought The Beatles Had The Hit?

Speaking of Smokey.
I Always Wanted To Be An Ikette

This is how I remember Ike and Tina. As I've blogged before, I saw this band a few times at the Friday Night Cantine at Lakewood High School (California). My sister, our friend Debbie and I all wore same style short, short, short skirts, and liked to dance like the Ikettes! I know they used to take 8mm films of the cantines at Lakewood. I'm curious if any of them survived.

From The Angry Arab ...

This is a headline from NYT: "World Powers Fail to Agree on Plan to End Fighting." That is a flat out lie, of course. World powers all agreed, only the US disagreed.

I Come Bearing The Horse's Head

Rice's visit showed how low American stock has fallen in the Middle East, since she came virtually empty-handed, merely as a go-fer on behalf of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, with little positive to offer. Berri thunderously rejected her ultimatums, or rather those of her political bosses. She came with nice words but Israeli bombs hit Beirut before and after her visit, according to my sources. Her professions of sympathy rang hollow, since her government was encouraging the bombing raids and blocking any UN or European move toward a cease-fire. She played no more exalted a role than Mafia enforcer, lifting her suit coat at the corner to display the loaded pistol as she discussed just how much the owner of the Lebanese restaurant would be paying per month for "protection" from certain of her "friends," or else, you know, something bad could happen to this nice restaurant of yours.

"...the politics doesn't enter into it."

"...the politics doesn't enter into it."

Barbara Boxer, in her defense of her support for Lieberman and her schtooping, er, humping, er, stumping for him, today.

How Disproportionate Is The Response?

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accused the international media Sunday of bias by not properly portraying the "murderous viciousness" of the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah in its war with Israel.

"The massive, brutal and murderous viciousness of Hezbollah is unfortunately not represented in its full intensity on television screens outside of Israel," Olmert told reporters.

Uh, that would be because of the Israeli "murderous viciousness" response thereto, which has resulted in a disproportionate attack for the captured two Israel Defense Forces soldiers.

Princess Superstar - Bad Babysitter

Ok, I'll stop for tonight, only because The History Channel's Revolutionary War series is up at 10:00 p.m.

Just in case you think I'm very mainstream, let's play some Princess Superstar ... Bad Babysitter!

Speaking Of Baritones ...

Sorry to cash in on the YouTube craze, not to mention C&L's music thing each night, but I'm so enjoying all the music I can access and share, I can't help it!

First off, I'm such a huge Junior Brown fan, it's not crazy. I think this video at least introduces those that have never heard of Junior's music before. He pionered the "instrument" that he plays. My favorite song is "409" that he did with the Beach Boys.
I Love A Good Baritone

I really like this Josh Turner song.

I Was Israel’s Dupe - By Tom Hayden

One might argue, and many Americans today might agree, that Hezbollah and Hamas started this round of war with their provocative kidnappings of Israeli soldiers. Lost in the headlines, however, is the fact that the Israelis have 9,000 Palestinian prisoners, and have negotiated prisoner swaps before. Others will blame the Islamists for incessant rocket attacks on Israel. But the roots of this virulent spiral of vengeance lie in the permanent occupation of Palestinian territories by the overconfident Israelis. As it did in 1982, Israel now admits that the war is not about prisoner exchanges or cease-fires; it is about eradicating Hezbollah and Hamas altogether, if necessary by an escalation against Syria or even Iran. It should be clear by now that the present Israeli government will never accept an independent Palestinian state, but rather harbors a colonial ambition to decide which Palestinian leaders are acceptable.

Excellent read. Hat tip to That's Another Fine Mess.

Air Guitar Diplomacy

"The more W. and his tough, by-any-means-necessary superbabe have tried to tame the Middle East, the more inflamed the Middle East has become," writes Dowd.

"Now the secretary of state is leaving, reluctantly and belatedly, to do some shuttle diplomacy that entails little diplomacy and no shuttling," Dowd continues. "It's more like air-guitar diplomacy."
Hat tip to Raw Story.

He Is For The Sanctity Of Life, Except When He's Not

Yes, this is a moment of clarity. The president will veto a law to protect frozen blastocysts stored in fertility clinic freezers--to preserve the sacredness of life. He won't do anything to stop missiles raining down on men, women and children caught in a war zone. In other words, he's pro-life--except when he's not.

Anyone Else Need More Booze?

When asked why he wouldn’t remember two five-figure settlements, Schlesinger said it’s because that’s "not that much money to me."

Ok, I may be five sheets to the wind, as they say, but this still sticks out.

NOT THAT MUCH MONEY TO ME?

I so need more booze.

FRIDAY'S RANDOM TEN

Friday's Random Ten

I notice that when I want to load up all my songs, Winamp works best. It takes about ten seconds to put up about 10,000 song titles. WMP, on the other hand, takes about 45 minutes or more to load up the same amount of tunes. I prefer the quality of WMP in playback, but unfortunately, if I'm doing a random top ten, I generally have to use Winamp. It's faster.

5666 - Garth Brooks - Beer Run

Yeee Haaaa! I actually like Garth Brooks. I started listening to him back in the 1980's when country music went a little rock and roll. I can't tell you how many hair band dudes I turned on to Garth's music (laughing .. ah, the memories)

1624 - Jimmie Rodgers - Honeycomb

Of course, I know this song when it actually came out, in the 1960's. Many youngins know this song as the first theme song for the breakfast cereal "Honey Combs."

7834 - Steely Dan - Deacon Blues

What can one say about this band, and this album, in particular? Such a milestone. I remember a concert I attended at the Long Beach Arena, Seals and Crofts were the headline band. The music that the was piped through the arena during the breaks was from this album, Aja, and was the first time most of us had heard it. Such a difference from their past rock oriented albums.

6105 - John Klemmer - Arabesque

Great sax player. My early 1970's experience, living in the north county area of San Diego (Leucadia), with an apartment on the bluff overlooking the ocean (ok, so I was on the other side of the street) I was a jazz fusion/funk freak. I liked the soft stylings of Klemmer and Bob James, as well as the sticatto style of The Brecker Brothers. I used to play Klemmer loud, with the lights out, lying on the floor. I had newly installed surround sound speakers, plus the whole apartment was wired (I was an complete audiophile back then, with a Macintosh preamp, the requisite Marantz receiver -- can't remember the tuner .. oh, yeah, a Scott ! .. you get the picture -- tubes, tubes, tubes).

2878 - Don Johnson - Heartbeat

Ok, stop laughing. When he was dating Babs (honey, what WERE you thinking making this record?), she did this album with him. I'm getting a refill.

7179 - Pete Seeger - Boll Weevil

Sorry to say I'm old enough to even remember this song. I need another drink. Gonna fire up a joint to celebrate my "folk" roots.

7158 - Paul Simon - Born At The Right Time

Gotta say I am an unabashed fan of Paul Simon's. Sure, I liked Simon and Garfunkel, who didn't back then? But when they split (sad, sad fucking day), the one that actually really took off, and that I liked, through each genre he embraced, was Paul Simon. Before I "got" the layering of "thirds" in harmony from Crosby, Stills and Nash, I learned harmony singing Art's parts to S&G songs.

4632 - Billy Vera - Big Chief

Ha ha. Funny song. Billy had only one big hit, "At This Moment," which came about thanks to Michael J. Fox's character on Family Ties breaking up with his on screen girlfriend (who turned out to be the Mrs. Fox later on), and "that song" playing on the jukebox in the background. Me, I'm one of the original "Beater Buddies" that followed this band in the '80's. This was the quintessential bar band in Los Angeles! Don't EVEN get me started on Billy trivia ... (grins).

5816 - Ike & Tina Turner - Rock Me Baby

You know, I'm rather fortunate to have grown up in Los Angeles. Most people really don't know that this band played high school cantines back in the 1960's. Hell, I saw James Brown, Brenton Woods, and Ike and Tina at Lakewood High School's Friday night cantine's back when I was a sophmore and junior at Long Beach's Wilson High School. My sister, our friend Debbie, and I, all wore the same really, really short skirts and that wratted high hair, and hung out with the "bad boys" at Lakewood High! Ike and Tina made numerous appearances at the cantines... and tell me you WOULDN'T want to have been sitting on that really small stage WATCHING Tina and her girls strut!

1095 - Boston - Don't Look Back

Cranking up that damn volume! Man, when Boston hit the scene, I nearly peed my pants. Between Boston and Queen, and that wall of guitar sound ... I only went to one Boston concert, in that no man's land called Orange County. Loved the concert, hated the venue.

Bonus Track

3818 - The Byrds - Mr. Tamborine Man

Who didn't emerge from this band successful? Of course, Dave Crosby, one. Chris Hillman, and we all know I'm a Souther, Hillman Furay fan (and let's not miss the connection with Richey Furay and Steve Stills - Buffalo Springfield, and Crosby, CSN&Y).

What's In A Number, When It's Murder

A local journalist told me bitterly this week that Iraqis find it ironic that Saddam Hussein is on trial for killing 148 people 24 years ago, while militias loyal to political parties now in government kill that many people every few days. But it is not an irony that anyone here has time to laugh about. They are too busy packing their bags and wondering how they can get out alive.

Very excellent point. Read more over at AMERICAblog.

Our Commander In Chief Speaks

"You eight hours? Me, too. Russia's a big country and you're a big country," Bush said, at one point telling a waiter he wanted Diet Coke. "Takes him eight hours to fly home. Russia's big and so is China. Yeah Blair, what're you doing? Are you leaving."

Uh, What Was That You Said, Condi?

RICE: Well, first of all, those hostilities were not very well contained as we found out on September 11th, so the notion that policies that finally confront extremism are actually causing extremism, I find grotesque.

Condi Rice on ABC's This Week, responding to Stephanopoulos's comment about the Bush administration's claim of peace and stability in the Middle East due to our actions in Iraq, and how peace and stability is not exactly the status quo these days.

I find Condi to be the one that is grotesque.

Hat tip to Think Progress.

UPDATE: This from Juan Cole:

The logical fallacy here is to describe a unilateral war of aggression and then a botched occupation with the euphemism of "confronting extremism." Of course the former can cause extremism. And did. That's not grotesque, that's just the fact of the matter.

The Universal Soldier

I see Talk Left has put up a YouTube of Buffy St. Marie singing "Universal Soldier."

Here's my tribute, about a year ago.

Back To Square One, Circa 1967

Despite bitter lessons from the past, Israel's political and military leaders remain addicted to the notion that, whatever they have a right to do, they have a right to overdo, to the point where they lose what international support they had when they began their retaliatory measures.

[snip]

On the surface, the situations in Gaza and in Lebanon may seem similar, but there are important differences. No matter how one judges the rights and wrongs of the recent Hamas assaults and Israeli reprisals, in Gaza the fundamental spark is Israel's occupation, which has now lasted nearly 40 years. Israel's leaders continue to suffer from the delusion they can defeat violent Palestinian resistance to that occupation without offering the Palestinians a credible, non-violent political path to statehood, promised in various international agreements.

My point, exactly.

"Why is saying "fuck you" worse than advocating violence against various public figures?"

Here is another rhetorical question for you: Why is saying "fuck you" worse than advocating violence against various public figures? And does this have something to do with the fact that the violence comes largely from the conservatives who are in power, whereas the foul language belongs to the currently powerless?

Good post. Go read. Donate to PBS.

Ooops, Here We Go Again

"In my judgment, the best way to stop the violence is to understand why the violence occurred in the first place," Bush said. And that's because Hezbollah has been launching rocket attacks out of Lebanon into Israel and because Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers."

Um, not!

If the statement is that understanding the root of the violence would assist in stopping it, Bush's example is not going to fly.

I've avoided any comment on this over the past couple of days, but let's just say that I took my side on this issue back in 1967 (when I was 15 years old) and Israel went to war with Syria, Jordan and Egypt. Then it took over the land in the West Bank, the Golan Heights and the Gaza Strip.

And that is where the argument continues to lie today.

As usual, the western press has failed to note that Israel creeps into Lebanon all the time and kidnaps fighters and civilians alike.

"We certainly would not want to have same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, quite honestly."

BUSH: I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world, like Iraq, where there’s a free press and free religion. And I told him that a lot of people in our country would hope that Russia will do the same thing. I fully understand, however, that there will be a Russian-style democracy.

PUTIN: We certainly would not want to have same kind of democracy as they have in Iraq, quite honestly.

[laughter from audience]

BUSH: Just wait.

Little press conference held at the G8 summit today, with the above exchange taking place between Bush and Putin.

Free press and free religion in Iraq? When did that occur? (looking under my desk) Nope, no free press or free religion here. (looking out the window) Nope, no free press or free religion here.

Chicken Shits

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - Democrats pulled an Internet ad that showed flag-draped coffins Friday after Republicans and at least two Democrats demanded it be taken down on grounds the image was insensitive and not fit for a political commercial.

The ad by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called for a "new direction" and displayed a staccato of images, including war scenes, pollution and breached levees as well as a photograph of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay doctored to look like a police mug shot.

The campaign committee replaced the ad with a radio commercial that targets Rep. John Hostetler, R-Ind., for opposing an increase in the minimum wage. Democrats have made a minimum wage increase a central theme of this year's election.

Democrats had featured the video ad for nearly two weeks on the DCCC Web site where it had gone largely unnoticed until Republicans began objecting to it this week. On Thursday, more than a dozen Republicans, many with military backgrounds, called on DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., to apologize. Democratic Reps. John Spratt of South Carolina and Chet Edwards of Texas asked Emanuel to pull or alter the ad.

"We're moving to another major effort that we're highlighting on our Web site," DCCC spokesman Bill Burton said.

In South Carolina, Spratt's Republican challenger, state Rep. Ralph Norman, commended the removal. It was "the right thing to do for the state, country and especially the brave men and women who serve in our military," said Norman's spokesman, Nathan Hollifield.

Ask me, again, why I am not a Democrat.

I Wanna Be A Stewardess!

More legroom, an upper deck lounge and the freedom to smoke to one's heart's content are the promises of the new SMINTAIR which hopes to make a maiden voyage from Dusseldorf to Tokyo in March 2007.

Alexander Schoppman, Managing Director at SMINTAIR, assures his future flyers that smoking in airline cabins is safe, and he says that airlines only stopped allowing their passengers to smoke in order to save money on fuel and air conditioner filters. On SMINTAIR's website, Schoppman also denies that second-hand smoke is a health threat and compares today's anti-smoking campaigns to those of the Nazis.

A report issued last month by the U.S. Surgeon General concluded that secondhand smoke exposure can cause heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and is a known cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory problems, ear infections and asthma attacks in infants and children.

SMINTAIR promises to take passengers back to the glory days of air travel by providing elegant meals and attentive service. This step back in time also includes the promise of "charming and beautiful flight attendants."
"In the 50s, 60s and 70s, I was always looking forward to every flight, enjoying a luxurious experience above the clouds," Schoppman says. "The stewardesses (yes, that was the job title, and they were proud of it!) were all friendly, very pretty and in their fresh uniforms."
Tickets have not yet gone on sale for the maiden flight, but SMINTAIR has 120 open positions for flight attendants, according to their website.

Well, harkening back to the "good ole days," eh? Any stewardesses ready to breathe in more of that smoke?

But the losers in the corrupted game are the workers (voters), including honest entrepreneurs and innovators, who are left frustrated and anxious by a system that rewards cheaters. Everyone is being eaten alive by the sharks in the water. The endless cycle of mergers and acquisitions keeps the money flowing up the pyramid, where it is then siphoned off for personal gain by pyramid-squatting CEOs.

Sissy Interview, If You Ask Me

CNN’s Larry King started his interview with President Bush by asking him about North Korea: “You’re into taking the lead on these things. You took the lead on Iraq, the U.N. went along, you got other countries to go along, why not take the lead here?”

Actually, the U.N. did not “go along” with the invasion of Iraq. President Bush promised to take the issue to the U.N. Security Council “no matter what the whip count,” but never did. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan described the invasion of Iraq as “not in conformity with the UN charter…from the charter point of view, it was illegal.”

It figures the lying would continue. And Larry King is such a media whore. Pardon my French, as they say. But, seriously .. is there ANYONE in real life that actually takes LARRY KING seriously?

Ok, judging from the damn silence... that would be a resounding NO.

I so despise this regime.

I Pick Lamont The Winner Of The Debate

I watched a C-Span feed at work, and caught all of the debate, although some of it was interrupted (on my end) by work distractions.

I thought Lieberman was a bore (yawn) and couldn't help but notice his constant interrupting of Lamont, and his voracious need to get in the last word on every single question.

And, then, there is the fact that Lieberman straight out lied a few times.

Add to that the fact that we actually have Democratic Senators vouching for this piece of shit. I thought the Democratic party knew the distinction between the Republicans and the Democrats. (Boxer, I'm referring to you).

Apparently ... not.

Haven't The People Of NOLA Suffered Enough?

Jack Strain: "Now I don’t get into calling people names and all that fact, but if you’re gonna walk the streets of St. Tammany Parish with dreadlocks and "Chee Wee" hairstyles, then you can expect to be getting a visit from a sheriff’s deputy."

There's really nothing to say to that, as the sheriff's words speak volumes already.

Happy 230th Birthday To The United States Of America

While you all are out enjoying the afternoon, with beer, hot dogs and pizza, take a little time out to read this important document. Think about how far we've come since the Revolutionary War, and try to realize just how bad things are for this country at this time, with Bush and the lot at the helm.

These are the men that stood up for real freedom.

Blog, Blog, Lieberman, Blog, Blah, Blah

The explosive announcement today by Sen. Joe Lieberman telling Connecticut that he is leaving the Democratic Party gives us a very rare glimpse into exactly how the Democratic Party in Washington views Democratic Party voters. In the last 24 hours, both Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Chris Dodd (D-CT) have refused to commit to supporting the eventual winner of the August 8th Connecticut Democratic primary. Schumer is head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee while Dodd is the other sitting Senator in Connecticut where this primary election is happening - and understanding their behavior is critical for those of us who want to see America’s democracy restored.

I really cannot say it any better than those already posting on this subject. Read, read, read and read.

"What sustains a government at this point is self-belief."

"This is the time, therefore, to hold firm, to make the right decisions for the country, no matter how difficult ... and to renew not by returning to the past but by showing we have the drive, determination and vision to make the future work," he (Tony Blair) said. "What sustains a government at this point is self-belief."

Boy, that made me laugh and spit up my coffee this morning! (Cleaning the monitor off).

Self-belief! That's the motto of these right wing nut jobs. Who gives a rat's ass about what reality is dictating, right? Just believe in yourself and all is well.

Fuckers.

NSA SET UP DOMESTIC SPYING PRE-9/11

June 30 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. National Security Agency asked AT&T Inc. to help it set up a domestic call monitoring site seven months before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, lawyers claimed June 23 in court papers filed in New York federal court.

A very, very interesting piece of information. No wonder the Bushman and his team were all hysterical over the illegal spying issue ... not because of the illegality of it, but because it was started BEFORE the attacks on September 11, 2001! So, the explanation that's been handed out all along, that this administration needed to go to extra ordinary lengths since 9/11 to spy on terrorists ... is just a load of hooey!

Boy, oh, boy ...
