HAIM - The Wire

I heard this group on Diddy's Revolt music channel.  I was "surfing" and passed it, but the beat lingered on, and I went back to the station.  Loved the groove.  Turns out these sisters have a background in performing and music and they are from the valley here in L.A. The back beat got me. 

I tried to upload their song for a few hours (yeah, it gets that bad these days when trying), and finally bought the damn single, twice, for $1.29.  Each single was a remix that I had already downloaded for free.  By the time this was discovered, the song I really wanted was finally downloaded.

Hope you like it.  They are performing on SNL tonight.  The single is not the same as the YouTube video.  I like the video better, but after spending a whopping $2.60 and about four hours, I am done trying to find the right download!

A Loud Voice In Music Silenced - RIP Eydie Gorme

Showing my age, and also revealing that in addition to being a "hipster" music-wise growing up, I was a fan of old school music.  I LOVED Eydie Gorme and her husband, Steve Lawrence.  Their sound was unique, and I used to pride myself on being able to tell the difference between the sound of Steve Lawrence, Jack Jones and Vic Damone!

Eydie had a big hit in the 1960's called "Blame It On The Bossa Nova," while Steve had huge hits with "Go Away Little Girl," and "Party Doll."

But I enjoyed them the most as perennial guests on the Johnny Carson show!

Into The Mystic

Getting over tragic events today ...

Monday's episode of "Defiance" on Syfy (my new favorite show) had Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic" by Jen Chapin, as the closing credits.  The last time I was moved by this song was on Judging Amy.



This rendition was heartbreaking.

King of Queens - Billy Vera

Been watching "King of Queens" re-runs this evening.  As I have noted through out my blog, I am one of the original "Beater buddies."  Billy Vera and the Beaters did the TV theme.



Billy's voice is very distinctive.  So many commercials that he has done the voice overs are too numerous to count.

I was dancing early in my life.  That included traditional dance, i.e. ballet and modern, as well as pop/rock.  The first dance I learned was the "mashed potato" (yeah, not the Twist LOL).



Chris Montez' song "Let's Dance" is making the rounds courtesy of a new commercial.  I can't find it anywhere to download or on You Tube.

Music To Eat By

I finally received my disabled bus pass in the mail.  It now costs me $14 a month instead of $75!  With that in mind, I took the bus out for a trial run today.

First off, given my new situation of not being employed, I have a lot of time on my hands on a daily basis.  I have been getting out of the house every day, and embarking on a journey, whether it is just to the Farmer's Market (and the Grove), or it's to Baja Fresh for a salad. 

Speaking of Baja Fresh, I have a pet peeve.  Why is it that a lot of "Mexican" eateries play "salsa" music instead of traditional Mexican music?  There is a vast difference from say, Celia Cruz and Ana Barbara.

I found myself today in Westwood, having started out going to the beach in Santa Monica, but stopping after traffic made me realize I would not get there until 5 p.m.  So, I walked around and found this Mexican restaurant, and went in for a late lunch.

I ordered soup and salad.

I didn't like either of them too much.  The salsa for the chips was better tasting. 

However, the music playing was salsa, and not Mexican.  Sheesh.

It was sort of different back when I was a teenager in the 1960's.  There are a number of songs that speak of love and "sex" with an older man and a younger woman, that were hits.  It didn't seem to spark the outrage that it does today.

Listen to the lyrics of these songs.  If you view them through the eyes of the listener in the time they were being played, it's one set of emotions.  If you try to view them through the lense of today's bias ...

RIP Donald Byrd

The influential jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd died on Monday at the age of 80, his nephew has said.

Alex Bugnon, a jazz pianist, reported his uncle's death on Thursday, though it has yet to be confirmed.

Bugnon wrote on his own Facebook page: "Donald passed away Monday in Delaware, where he lived. His funeral will be held in Detroit sometime next week. I have no more patience for this unnecessary shroud of secrecy placed over his death by certain members of his immediate family. "

Confirmed or not, the jazz radio station here reported it and played his music all day.

Just following up on my Fun. love-fest.  This is from an appearance on SNL, which is when I actually first saw/heard them perform.  I was a total fan from that point on.

I am such a new fan of this band.  Six Grammy nominations!  You know, when you get an itch for a "sound," it bites you all day long!  Tell me you don't dig them ...  Lyrically they are unique, vocally, distinct and overall, exciting.  I have such a crush on the lead singer ... damn it!
