Interesting World Globes

I bought this globe for $5 at a garage sale today.

Here is a picture of one with a different stand, but obviously in better condition. Another one to check out as well.

Here is a picture of another one, again in better quality, but more in line with the stand I have (except someone seems to have painted the stand on mine).

This is the label on the globe. It is obviously from the 1930's, and some of the countries on the globe do not even exist anymore.

I've always had an interest in globes and maps.

Bottom line, if this Hammond's globe was even close to being in mint condition, it'd be worth close to $2,000!!!! I'd have to check, but even in the condition mine is in, it should be worth a few hundred dollars. Not bad for a $5 investment!

I also got another globe, but I'll take pictures of it and post about it later.

Thomas Kinkade Dies - Age 54

I have to admit I am an unabashed fan of Thomas Kinkade. Although I do not own a single painting of his, I have downloaded probably as many as twenty to thirty desktop themes using his many wonderful paintings.

I know that many in the art world have feelings about him from mild dislike to serious despising, mostly based on his mass marketing of his art work. I say "eh" to that. He does what he does to make money, but that does not make his work less unique.

Art from the self-described "painter of light" adorns many living rooms in America. It emphasizes simple pleasures and warm, positive images of idyllic cottages, lighthouses and colorful gardens.

"My mission as an artist is to capture those special moments in life adorned with beauty and light," Kinkade said in a message on his website. "I work to create images that project a serene simplicity that can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone. That's what I mean by sharing the light."

He was only 54. I turn 60 next Monday. No more new and wonderful paintings from him.

RIP, Mr. Kinkade, and brighten up heaven a little on this Easter/Passover weekend.

Mear One, Finalizing Alphonse Mucha Mural

This might be the final night, and Mear One will complete the piece.

Here are some of Alphonse's work, so you can see the inspiration for the art Mear One did on this piece.

Live Art, Gotta Love It! Mear One Still At It

Sorry I missed my "daily" reporting of Mear One's piece last night. I was kind of seriously drunk last night (laughing). Hey, I had the grandkid for a week, with no life, so sue me!

Anyway, here's some stuff from yesterday.

The cut-away is me giving shit to some people that parked in my apartment building parking spot ... to see Mear One, but they lied to me telling me they were parking to visit someone in the building, and I was like, yeah, who? Ha ha.

I'm new to Mear One's work. I am not new to grafitti in Los Angeles. I just didn't connect the dots here.

What I find fascinating about Mear's work, is not the art in and of itself, but the speed in which he produces his art. Even though a lot of his stuff is on canvas, he still paints as if he has to do under the cover of night, like the grafitti artist.

On my train trip to Seattle from L.A., I was amazed at some of the grafitti painted in lumber yards, train yards, storage areas, etc. that were real pieces of art.

If It's Monday Night, It Must Be Day Four Of Mear One!

They left a tad early last night, around 10:30 p.m. I am not sure how long they will be staying tonight.

At about 10:30 p.m., and I think they are going to call it quits soon.

Live Blogging, Day Three, Mear One, 6th & La Brea

I am out again, this evening, watching "live art" develop.

I'll keep "live blogging" the event (grins). Here we are before sunset (no, not the boulevard, the damn sun setting stupid!) (the butt shot belongs to Roger L. Griffith.

Alphonse Mucha/Mear One

Only in Hollywood. Pouring my usual Rum and Coke, I saw this actually happening and went out with my cheap ass video camera. Mear One, an artist, is painting this mural on a commercial building wall (that houses an art gallery) of Alphonse Mucha. I took these shots, and I have Mear's permission to post this video and pictures.

Come on, imagine going into your kitchen, and this is the view outside of your window! I love my life!

Interesting Tag Art

This tag art, as show by as best a picture I could take of the wall, just showed up Saturday morning. It was not there Friday night when I went to bed. It is on the side of the gas station that abuts the alley, and is not seen from the main street, although if you are going eastbound on 6th toward La Brea, it will most definitely catch your eye.

I can honestly say I have not seen a piece of tag art up front and personal as good as this. I hope the gas station has no intention of painting over it -- usually most graffiti is painted over by the businesses that are on La Brea within at least two days after they get tagged. But this ... this is a work of art!
