Get used to it ... the next thirty days will either be fun or hell for my readers!
Growing up in the 50's-60's television era, these were the types of shows we had to watch, because there was generally only one television set in the house, and the adults got to choose ... although, I will have to admit their choice of Laugh In puzzled me, considering they were not getting the laughs or the jokes.
Still, I had to endure enough of Lawrence Welk to actually enjoy music, for the sake of music.
Variety shows were the staple of the early TV era. And Christmas specials were the norm. The only rival to Perry Como was Andy Williams.
Enjoy this!
Some of the things they could get past the censors ... LOL

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. I am so glad that you are not afraid to call it what it is. I will not shop anywhere that will not call it Christmas. I've left full baskets at the register if the clerk responds to my Merry Christmas with a Happy Holidays. It's not a holiday tree, it's a Christmas Tree.
That's so cool...shows like that were a huge weekly occasion for me growing up in the sixties...there was always something on in the evenings, particularly on Friday-Saturday-Sunday...everything from the Smothers Brothers to the GE College Bowl to Bullwinkle...odd that in those times there seemed to be much more creativity and freedom of expression on the airwaves.
I cannot bear to watch television now, other than the occasional sports event.
Cognac, please, and thanks, good bartender!
I don't relate to Christmas as you do, Tony. And I do say Happy Holidays a lot.
As you already know, I'm not Christian, but a Baha'i (which is why we were never able to follow through on the godfather thing with Zaire, because Zaire was never going to be baptized, hence, no need for a godfather).
I only started getting into Christmas, as I have noted time and time again on this blog, after my ex made it a big deal that I did not celebrate it in the second round of custody battles over my daughter, when she was seven. So, I bought a tree, spent thousands on ornaments and other accessories that many families save and acquire over the years, and voila, I had instant Christmas. What makes me like the holidays is the music. I am musically inclined, raised and bred, so music would, of course, be the catharsis. I don't relate to Christmas as the birth of Christ. But I do relate to the unreligious side of it, the happiness of the time, the gift giving, and of course, the music.
I don't care if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, it's the same thing to me. But, I do recognize that December 25, in America, is celebrated as "Christmas" so I'm ok with that.
--------> VSOP shot for you, Mr. Anonymous!
Like you, I enjoy the happiness that is part of this time of the year, and the attempts that many make to be socially acceptable to the rest of humanity.
It was different back in the days when we were kids, from the King Family shows, to Andy Williams and Perry Como specials, to the Carpenters singing beautiful songs. I also really do like the religious songs, my fave being O Holy Night.
