WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday blocked an effort by Democrats to quickly pass an extension of jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.
Even though a large majority of the House, 279-144, voted for the measure, it fell three votes short of the two-thirds vote needed under special rules for passing the bill, which would have extended jobless benefits for those who exhaust the usual 26 weeks of state benefits.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said the bill will be brought back to the floor on Thursday under rules requiring only a simple majority for passage. If it does pass, the Senate would then consider it.

Congress Votes To Stick It To The Regular Guy, Again
They won't extend unemployment benefits, but they will bail out wall street, mortgage brokers, lenders, banks, etc. You get the drift.

Stop the presses, Carrie and I actually agree!! It was ok to pass the $50 billion stimulous package to give everyone $600.00, but let's not help those who have been out of work for more then 26 weeks. Yea that helps the economy. The unemployment extention should pass with bipartisan support. It's for the good of the country and the person who is looking for work. Other then your downright hatred of Bush (which you have a right too) I find your blog site very informative.
