Love him or hate him, if you loved baseball, you "knew" him.
Firing Billy Martin and rehiring him five times ... the "love/hate" relationship that is Steinbrenner sums it up.
Banned from baseball, too!
I watched a special Keith Olbermann tonight. Very good insights from others, including the one by Ken Burns that perhaps Steinbrenner's drive to win would have been better served had he owned a football team ... based on the concept that Steinbrenner got depressed if the team couldn't win ALL their games, and with football's 16 game season before playoffs would have been a better forum for the "winner take all" mentality of George.
Either way, he was a colorful baseball figure, changed the way the game was handled (not necessarily played, but his money did have an impact on the game), and one of the either hate 'em or love 'em Yankee pride definitely originals!

RIP, slugger.
